Johnson scores career-high 34 points as Women’s Basketball battles past Converse, 74-64

SPARTANBURG, S.C.Destiny Johnson set a new career-high with 34 points on 11 of 19 shooting as the Lees-McRae women's basketball team used a 19-6 run in the second quarter to clinch a 74-64 road victory against Converse in the Conference Carolinas action this evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Johnson shot 4 of 6 from behind the three-point line and 8 of 8 from the charity stripe to go along with a game-high nine rebounds and three steals.
  • Jessica Henderson chipped in 11 points off the bench, while MaKayla Smith and Davinique Campbell each added nine points.
  • Both teams matched each other point-for-point in the opening minutes until Converse closed the first quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 15-12 edge at the first intermission.
  • The Bobcats outscored the Valkyries 19-6 in the second frame, led by Johnson and Smith who combined for 14 points, to claim 31-21 halftime lead.
  • Lees-McRae maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the third quarter, highlighted by a three-point field goal by Bri Wright with 43 seconds left, to extend the lead to 53-41 at the final intermission.
  • Converse closed the gap to as little as five points in the fourth frame, but late free throws by the Bobcats helped Lees-McRae clinch the conference victory on the road.
  • The Valkyries held a slim margin in second-chance points (14-8), but failed to overcome being outscored 26-9 in points off turnovers and 18-12 in bench points.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Keyshuna Fair pace the Valkyries with 21 points on 7 of 16 shooting.
  • Lindsey Hardin and Jordan Brown chipped in 15 and 10 points respectively.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats host Converse in the Williams Gymnasium on Thursday at 5 p.m.
