Second-half run lifts Lander past Men’s Lacrosse, 15-12

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Lander won 23 of the 31 total face-offs and outscored the host Bobcats 11-3 in the second half en route to a 15-12 victory in the non-conference contest this afternoon on Tate Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • J.P. Galloway paced the Bobcats with four goals, an assist, and two caused turnovers.
  • Tyler Flannelly, Mike Moore, Tyler Finley, and Jonathan Barry all finished with two goals and an assist.
  • Ben Davidson chipped in three caused turnovers, while Jacob Zellen posted seven ground balls.
  • Lander scored three of the first four goals to take an early lead, but the Bobcats scored three goals in the final six minutes to claim a 4-3 lead at the end of the first 15 minutes of action.
  • Finley, Galloway (2 goals), Barry, and Flannelly all scored in the second frame to give Lees-McRae a 9-4 halftime lead. Antonio Cruz tallied 11 first-half saves to keep the lead intact.
  • Lander responded by scoring seven goals in the third quarter to shift momentum and even the score at 11-11 at the final intermission.
  • The Bearcats' run continued in the final frame by scoring the first four goals to take a 15-11 lead.
  • Lees-McRae closed out the games scoring as Galloway scored his fourth with 10 seconds remaining.
  • The Bobcats forced 30 Lander turnovers, but were outshot 31-19 in shots-on-goal as the Bearcats finished 3 of 6 on extra-man opportunities.
  • Cruz finished with 16 saves in net for Lees-McRae.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Nolan Oakley finished with five goals and an assist to pace the Bearcats.
  • Carson Theriault added three goals and two assists, while both Liam Mackay and Rhys Peterson spent time in the Lander net and tallied a combined seven saves.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats will open Conference Carolinas play as they host North Greenville on Wednesday, March 17 at 6 p.m.
