BANNER ELK, N.C. – Lees-McRae men's soccer downed King this evening by a final of 3-0 in front of the home fans on Tate Field as
Laurin Boettcher,
Gray Smith, and
Harrison Watts all scored in the contest. The Bobcats also notched a point with the win tonight.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 3; King -- 0
LOCATION: Tate Field -- Banner Elk, North Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (6-2-5/4-1-3); King (2-8-2/1-6-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- King got the early chance in the 11th minute as Kenneth Walton had a shot on goal, but Joshua Garvilla was up to the task with his first goal of the contest.
- Walton nearly had the first goal of the night in the 13th minute as his shot hit the top of the crossbar, but the ball bounced away to keep the score knotted at zero.
- Watts made the score 1-0 in favor of Lees-McRae in the 30th minute after an assist by Lane Koch.
- The Bobcats doubled their lead after Boettcher's header found the back of the net in the 33rd minute off the free kick by Fletcher Dyson. Lees-McRae held the two-goal advantage heading into the halftime break.
- Smith gave the Bobcats the final goal of the net after a set piece in the 83rd minute with Dyson picking up his second assist of the contest.
- Lees-McRae led with 17 shots on the evening with 11 on target as Watts paced the Bobcats with five on net and six Bobcats contributing one shot on target also.
- J. Garvilla kept the Tornado out of the net in the contest as he hauled in five saves for Lees-McRae in the 3-0 victory.
FOR THE TORNADO:
- Douglas Alves and Walton registered two shots on goal for King in the 3-0 setback as Jack Hyatt took the loss in goal for the Tornado while grabbing eight saves.
NOTEWORTHY:
- After tonight's soccer doubleheader sweep, Lees-McRae holds the 3-1 advantage in the "Battle for the Blue Ridge Cup" with King in the 2022-23 season.
