FROM THE COACHES:
- "The cheerleading program has not competed in over 20 years," said Wimberley. "Over the past five years, we have worked towards adding back competitions, but we were unable to go to the last two season's championships due to COVID. We were determined to get out there this year and it was no small task. Student-athletes are asked to juggle academics, supporting men's and women's basketball, community involvement, their own personal lives, and to prepare for their own competitions. Cheerleading is so different that other sports as well. At competitions we've got only one shot to perfectly execute 42 eight counts or 2.5 minutes worth of tumbling, stunts, pyramids, and much more. We don't get another shot. Stakes are are high and the endurance/strength required is substantial. This season, our team goal was to hit our routine and we were hoping to hit zero with no deductions. I am proud of these student-athletes for putting in the work and perservering through COVID, injuries, scheduling issues, and everything in between."
FROM THE STUDENT-ATHLETES:
- "This was an experience I will never forget," said senior captain Madi Cantrell. "After having competitions taken away from us due to COVID, it was definitely a bittersuite moment being able to finish my cheerleading career with Lees-McRae at the first competition in two decades. We went out and competed our hearts out. I am so proud to be on this team."
