Women’s Lacrosse falls short to Southern Wesleyan in conference opener, 13-8

CENTRAL, S.C.Kalbie Grassett, Haley Donovan, Genesis Lutsky combined for seven goals, but it was not enough as host Southern Wesleyan tallied four goasl in each of the first three quarters en route to clinching a 13-8 win in the Conference Carolinas opener for both teams this afternoon.
 
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Southern Wesleyan – 13; Lees-McRae – 8
LOCATION: Childs Field – Central, South Carolina
RECORDS: Southern Wesleyan (2-5/1-0), Lees-McRae (0-6/0-1)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Grassett finished with a team-high three goals, two caused turnovers, five ground balls, and six draw controls, while Donovan and Lutsky both scored two goals and combined for five draw controls.
  • Castro also collected a goal for the Bobcats.
  • Southern Wesleyan sprinted out of the gates with two goals in the first 1:30 to take an early lead, but the Bobcats used a free-position goal by Donovan and a goal by Lutsky to even the score at 2-2.
  • The Warriors scored the next four goals to extend the lead back to 6-2.
  • Grassett, Lutsky, and Donovan all scored in the second frame to cut the lead back to 6-5.
  • Southern Wesleyan scored the final two goals of the first half to take an 8-5 lead at halftime.
  • The Warriors outscored the Bobcats 4-1 in the third frame, with the lone Lees-McRae goal going to Grassett, to extend the lead to 12-6 at the final intermission.
  • Castro and Grassett both scored in the final quarter, but it was not enough as Southern Wesleyan clinched the conference win.
  • Emily Davidson and Mckenzie Mellen made 14 saves in net for the Bobcats.
  • Lees-McRae held a 29-27 advantage in shots-on-goals and were had the game's only extra-person opportunity.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Kelsey Hawkins and Tabitha Beecher combined for seven goals and five assists to pace the Warriors.
  • Kaeleigh McDaniel finished with a game-high 21 saves for Southern Wesleyan
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcat will return to Tate Field on Wednesday, March 9 as they host Newberry in a non-conference match at 3 p.m.
