Men's Soccer Falls to Belmont Abbey, 2-1

BANNER ELK, N.C. Owen Smith tallied his second goal of the season for the Bobcats, but Lees-McRae men's soccer ultimately fell to Belmont Abbey, 2-1, after the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute by Crusader Jorge Aguilar.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Bobcats and Crusaders played the majority of the first half in the midfield with no quality chances coming until the latter stages of the first 45. Zion Duncan had the first shot on goal in the 39th minute, but Jonathan Kienle made his first save of the night. 
  • Ryan Aliam and Nils Schulze had one shot each in the first half of tonight's contest, but were unable to give the Bobcats the lead.
  • O. Smith gave the Bobcats the one-goal lead after finding the back of the net off a pass from Jesper Jonsson in the 55th minute.
  • Davis McBee scored the equalizer for Belmont Abbey two minutes later after a miscue from the Bobcats.
  • Schulze had a quality chance on target in the 76th minute of action, but Crusader Will Whitman kept the match tied at 1-1.
  • Aguilar gave the Crusaders the 2-1 lead after his shot deflected off a Bobcat and rolled into the back of the net in the 81st minute.
  • Schulze and Harrison Watts had opportunities for Lees-McRae, but their shots sailed off the target as Belmont Abbey held on for the 2-1 victory on Tate Field.

FOR THE CRUSADERS:
  • Aguilar and McBee registered the goals for Belmont Abbey and Whitman added a victory between the posts for the Crusaders.
 
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae heads to Florence, South Carolina for a 3:30 p.m matchup on Saturday afternoon with Francis Marion.
