Women's Basketball Forces 22 Turnovers in Exhibition at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Lees-McRae women's basketball recorded 17 points off 22 USC Upstate turnovers, but the Spartans earned the 72-44 win on Tuesday evening. Nadiya Hairston led the Bobcats for the second straight contest with 10 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hairston started the game on fire for Lees-McRae with two three-pointers in the first four minutes of the game. The Bobcats then went on 5-0 run capped by a triple from Sandra Mason to gain the 11-10 lead.
  • The Spartans answered with an 11-0 run over two minutes of play in the first quarter. Emily Barr knocked down a jumper at the 1:21 mark of the first and Mason collected another basket as Lees-McRae trailed 24-15 after the first 10 minutes.
  • USC Upstate held Lees-McRae to six points in the second quarter and led at the break, 39-21. The Spartans earned their first victory of the season at 72-44 in the G.B. Hodge Center.
  • Barr went 4-5 from the field with eight points and one steal for Lees-McRae and Essence Sumner followed with seven points on 3-5 shooting. Kirsten Watt tallied six points and Mason registered five in 15 minutes of action.
  • Thailand Smith posted four points, four rebounds, and one steal in tonight's contest and Sydney Hayes had three points on a three-pointer.
  • Lees-McRae held the advantage in points off turnovers, 17-10, and bench points, 34-29, in the second of three exhibitions in the 2023-24 season.

FOR THE SPARTANS:
  • Isabell West had a game-high 21 points on 8-10 shooting and Dakota Reeves joined West in double-figures with 15 points on 5-9 from three-point range.
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae women's basketball faces Mars Hill tomorrow evening at Mars Hill, North Carolina. The tip-off from Chambers Gymnasium is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start. The Bobcats hold the all-time series, 4-3, since 2013.
