Women's Basketball Opens Conference Play with 68-53 Loss at Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Leah Barringer scored a team-high 10 points in 28 minutes of action, but Lees-McRae women's basketball suffered the 68-53 loss at Mount Olive in their Conference Carolinas opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Trojans opened the day on the 5-0 run before Layla Tillery knocked in a basket with 7:24 left in the opening quarter. UMO took the first by a score of 19-8 off a layup via Asia Smith.
  • Lees-McRae cut the deficit back to 11 points after a layup from Barringer with 2:27 to play in the first half, but Mount Olive held the 11-point margin at 33-22 heading into the halftime break.
  • UMO pushed their lead to 19 points with 2:06 left in the third, but Emily Barr answered with a jumper at the 1:51 mark.
  • The Bobcats started a rally in the fourth quarter on a quick 4-0 run capped by a jumper from Logan Dutka at 57-49. The Trojans regained the double-digit lead and collected the 68-53 win on their home floor.
  • Lees-McRae had 31 costly turnovers in today's action with Mount Olive recording 29 points off those turnovers and holding the significant margin in fastbreak points at 23-8. The Bobcats tallied 32 points in the paint to UMO's 32 and Lees-McRae scored 27 points off the bench.
  • Barringer had 10 points, six rebounds, two assists, and one steal to lead the Bobcats for the second consecutive game. Barr registered eight points, six rebounds, and four assists in 22 minutes of play and Dutka joined her with eight points on a perfect 4-4 shooting.
  • Kirsten Watt followed with seven points off the bench and Sandra Mason collected six points on 3-6 from the floor and four rebounds.

FOR THE TROJANS:
  • Laila Anderson had a career-high 32 points on 13-18 shooting and 4-6 from three-point range to lead the Trojans. Reagan Hune and Asia Smith each chipped eight points in the contest.
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae women's basketball is off for exams on Monday through Wednesday of next week. The Bobcats will face Erskine on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. in Due West, South Carolina.
