Women's Basketball Falls to Erskine in Defensive Battle

DUE WEST, S.C. – Emily Barr and Kirsten Watt each scored a team-high 10 points, but Lees-McRae women's basketball suffered the 48-46 loss at Erskine on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Anzya Cook collected the go-ahead basket at 48-46 with four seconds remaining in the game. Lees-McRae women's basketball advanced the ball into the front court off a timeout and Nadiya Hairston narrowly missed the game-winner at the buzzer for the Bobcats.
  • Erskine took the opening quarter by a 12-6 margin after Barr connected on free throws to end the first stanza. The Flying Fleet then built their lead to double digits at 17-6, but the Bobcats held Erskine scoreless for the remaining 7:58 of the first half and held the 20-17 advantage heading into the halftime break.
  • To start the second half, Hairston pushed the Bobcat lead to five points off a fastbreak layup. Erskine lifted the lid off the basket at the 8:06 mark of the third quarter, but Lees-McRae carried the 31-29 margin into the final 10 minutes of action.
  • Logan Dutka gave Lees-McRae the four-point advantage with 5:47 left in regulation, but Erskine's Alexis Burce knocked a three to knot the matchup at 38-38. Albany Wilson gave Erskine the lead again at 40-38 off a steal via Burce.
  • The Bobcats continued to battle down three with a little over one minute to play in the contest. Watt recorded a layup and successfully made a free throw to tie the score at 46. Erskine's Cook drove the lane and recorded the go-ahead basket with nine seconds remaining in the Conference Carolinas game.
  • Barr went 8-10 from the free-throw line and recorded nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks on the day. Watt had 10 points to go along with five rebounds and one block. Hairston and Sandra Mason each added eight points for the Bobcats.

FOR THE FLYING FLEET:
  • Wilson led Erskine on the day with 18 points on 7-18 shooting and collected 11 rebounds in today's performance. Cook followed with 10 points, five boards, three steals, and two assists.
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae women's basketball heads to Johnson City, Tennessee for an exhibition with East Tennessee State on Sunday, Dec. 10. The contest with the Buccaneers is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
