Men's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw with Young Harris on Homecoming

BANNER ELK, N.C. Landon Robbins placed a perfect header into the back of the net from a cross via David Garcia in the 36th minute of action as Lees-McRae men's soccer registered a 1-1 draw against Young Harris on Saturday evening.

RECORDS: Lees-McRae (3-3-3; 3-1-1), Young Harris (5-2-2/4-0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Young Harris maintained the majority of the possession in the first half, but the Bobcats only allowed one shot on target in the 17th minute with Sean Green making the save on a shot from Alexis Morel. 
  • Garcia made a couple of great moves on the Mountain Lion defender and played a wonderful ball that found the head of Robbins at the right time to give the Bobcats the 1-0 advantage in the 36th minute of play.
  • Garcia had another opportunity for Lees-McRae with 14 seconds left in the first half, but his shot hit the left post as the two sides entered the halftime break.
  • The Mountain Lions continued to bring pressure in the attack, but the Bobcats backline of Laurin Boettcher and Gray Smith held strong through 60 minutes of the match.
  • Young Harris' Thomas Kleinpenning evened the contest at one goal apiece in the 70th minute after finishing a ball from Malte Skaerbaek.
  • Green made his third and fourth saves of the night in the 84th minute and 88th minute of the match and the Bobcats set up for a wild ending with two seconds left in the contest.
  • Lees-McRae earned a corner kick with two seconds remaining in the match and Owen Smith played a ball into the box that found the head of Boettcher, but Young Harris' goalkeeper pushed the shot away at the final whistle.
  • Green recorded four stops in goal for the Bobcats and Boettcher and Smith recorded the full 90 minutes for Lees-McRae in the field. Harrison Watts had two shots for the Bobcats on the night.

FOR THE MOUNTAIN LIONS:
  • Stathis Paplomatos recorded one save in the match for the Mountain Lions and Kleinpenning had two shots on target.
 
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae heads to the Palmetto State next Saturday to face Converse in Spartanburg at 7 p.m.
