Women's Volleyball Goes 1-1 on Friday with Four-Set Victory against Milligan

BRISTOL, TENN. – Lees-McRae women's volleyball went 1-1 on the day with a four-set victory against Milligan before falling to Mars Hill in straight sets on Friday. Sydney Stigler combined for 31 kills in the two matches and Madison Goins contributed 81 assists on the day.

GAME 1 BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae def. Milligan, 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21)
LOCATION: Student Center Complex – Bristol, Tennessee
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (3-2), Milligan (5-4)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Milligan took the opening set 25-21 after tallying a hitting percentage of .162 and 13 kills.
  • Lees-McRae battled back to even the match at one set apiece with a dominant 25-19 set win. The Bobcats hit .163 in the set and Patrycja Rykala finished the set with a kill off a pass from Goins. 
  • The Bobcats continued their winning ways in the third with a 25-19 set win after two consecutive points. Stigler and Destiny Holley combined for a block at the net to give Lees-McRae the one-set advantage.
  • In the fourth frame, the Bobcats found their rhythm with a match-high 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .267 to collect the win in four sets.
  • Stigler had a season-high 18 kills to lead Lees-McRae in the victory and Holley followed with 10 kills. Rykala collected eight kills in the contest along with two service aces and four digs.
  • Goins added 47 assists and Lauren Xayavong had a match-high 21 digs for the Bobcats.

FOR THE BUFFALOES:
  • Ella Madden had a team-high 13 kills along with five digs and four blocks for Milligan. Shelby Miller joined her double-digit kills with 11.
 
GAME 2 BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Mars Hill def. Lees-McRae, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-22)
LOCATION: Student Center Complex - Bristol, Tennessee
RECORDS: Mars Hill (3-1), Lees-McRae (3-3)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae fell in their second match of the day to Mars Hill in straight sets. Stigler rattled off her fifth of six matches with double-digit kills to start the season for the Bobcats with 13.
  • The Bobcats played their best set in the third with a hitting percentage of .213, but Mars Hill held off the late rally to secure the match in three sets.
  • Holley collected nine kills for the Bobcats and Rykala added five. Goins dished out 34 assists in the contest and Xayavong had a match-high 23 digs for Lees-McRae.

FOR THE LIONS:
  • Ioana Poenaru had a team-high 10 kills for Mars Hill and Jada Cannon followed on the attack with nine kills.
  • Jordan Schmucker added 32 assists to her season totals and Laela Jimenez tallied 23 digs in the victory.

UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae women's volleyball opens their 2023 home slate with non-conference opponent Charleston on Tuesday night on the McNair & Debi Tornow Court. The first serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
