Women's Basketball Drops Conference Carolinas Matchup to Francis Marion, 72-56

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Kirsten Watt led three Lees-McRae women's basketball players in double figures with 14 points, but the Bobcats fell to Francis Marion, 72-56, on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae tied the score at six points apiece after Watt knocked down back-to-back free throws with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter. Francis Marion pushed the advantage to 15-8 and took the opening quarter 19-11.
  • The Bobcats cut the deficit to seven points on a jumper via Layla Tillery, but the Patriots added to its lead and claimed the 33-24 lead after 20 minutes of play.
  • Dianna Spence registered a three-pointer to open the scoring in the second half and Paris Brown tallied a basket with 4:10 left to cut the deficit to six points. FMU pushed their lead back to double digits and held the 15-point advantage at the end of third quarter.
  • Nadiya Hairston cut the Patriots' lead back to 11 points on a jumper, but Francis Marion took the contest by a final of 72-56 on Saturday afternoon.
  • Lees-McRae went 21-67 (31.3%) from the field with five three-pointers and 9-15 from the free-throw line.
  • Watt had a team-high 14 points on 6-12 shooting and Hairston and Tillery each scored 10 points on the day.

FOR THE PATRIOTS:
  • Lauryn Taylor recorded 25 points and 21 rebounds to lead Francis Marion in today's contest and added four assists and one steal. Kiana Lee followed with 16 points in 38 minutes of action and Trinity Adams followed with 12. Aniyah Oliver joined her fellow teammates in double figures with 11 in 35 minutes played.
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae women's basketball concludes their three-game homestand on Wednesday, Jan. 17 when the Bobcats play Belmont Abbey. The tip-off from the McNair & Debi Tornow Court is slated for 5 p.m.
