First Quarter Proves Critical in Women's Basketball's Loss to Converse on Wednesday

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Leah Barringer and Kirsten Watt registered double figures as Lees-McRae women's basketball dropped a 66-52 decision to Converse on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Converse – 66; Lees-McRae – 52
LOCATION: McNair & Debi Tornow Court – Banner Elk, North Carolina
RECORDS: Converse (8-10/4-5); Lees-McRae (1-13/0-9)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Logan Dutka opened the scoring for the Bobcats with 9:22 left in the first quarter, but Converse answered with 15 straight points and took the opening quarter 18-4.
  • The Valkyries added to their first quarter lead with 20 points in the second quarter and held the 38-19 advantage after 20 minutes.
  • Lees-McRae cut into the deficit in the third quarter as the Bobcats trailed by 13 points heading into the final quarter. The Bobcats got within eight points in the fourth quarter, but Converse picked up the 66-52 win in Banner Elk.
  • Barringer had a game-high 14 points off the bench for Lees-McRae and recorded six rebounds and one steal in the game. Watt followed with 12 points on 4-9 shooting and added four assists. 
  • Aleysha Hill registered seven points in the start for Lees-McRae and Emily Barr had six points, 11 rebounds, and two steals in the contest.

FOR THE VALKYRIES:
  • Converse went 25-50 (50.0%) from the field and Zariyah Washington led the Valkyries in the scoring column with 13 points. Jordan Brown, Alisa Davenport, and Sydney Wilson each collected 11 points in the win and Elisa Sole Sanchez joined her teammates with 10 points on the evening.
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae women's basketball heads to Wilson, North Carolina for a league contest with Barton on Saturday, Jan. 27. The game with the Bulldogs is scheduled for 2 p.m.
