Women's Basketball Hangs Tough with No. 17 UNC Pembroke

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Lees-McRae women's basketball held a three-point advantage with five minutes left in today's Conference Carolinas, but No. 17 UNC Pembroke tallied the 58-52 win at King University.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Thailand Smith knocked down a jumper to open the scoring for the Bobcats 14 seconds in today's contest. UNCP staked out to an 18-10 lead and Lees-McRae trailed 18-13 after the first 10 minutes.
  • The Braves pushed their lead to 12 points off a layup from Malea Garrison and led 31-22 after the first half.
  • Lees-McRae continued to chip away at the lead and cut into the deficit after two free throws from Shayne Burton at 45-37.
  • The Bobcats turned around the contest in the fourth as they went on 6-0 run for the 52-49 lead with 4:58 to play in regulation. Hairston connected on a jumper for the three-point lead.
  • UNCP's Kelci Adams buried a three the following possession and the Braves finished the game on a 9-0 scoring run for the 58-52 win on Saturday afternoon.
  • Nadiya Hairston had a team-high 11 points and added four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block. Leah Barringer followed with seven points off the bench. Kayli Dunn and Smith contributed six points for the Bobcats.
FOR THE BRAVES:
  • Garrison paced three Braves in double-digit scoring with 13 points on 5-7 shooting and recorded seven rebounds. Anastasia Sinclair had 11 points in 34 minutes and Zaria Clark had 10 points for UNCP.
