Men's Volleyball Takes Set off Belmont Abbey, Falls in Four

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Lees-McRae men's volleyball battled Belmont Abbey in four sets of Conference Carolinas play this evening, but the Crusaders earned the match victory on the McNair & Debi Tornow Court. M.J. Doyled led the Bobcats with 12 kills and Austin Beaird joined him in double-digit kills with 10 on the night.

FINAL SCORE: Belmont Abbey def. Lees-McRae, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-17, 25-18)

RECORDS: Belmont Abbey (9-2/5-1), Lees-McRae (1-12/0-6)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae evened the match at one set apiece with an attack error from Belmont Abbey in the second set.
  • The Bobcats led 5-1 early in the third set, but the Crusaders bounced back for the 25-17 set victory and took the match in fourth set at 25-18.
  • Lees-McRae had a .171 hitting percentage with 43 total kills. Belmont Abbey collected a .272 hitting percentage with 50 kills on the evening.
  • Doyle had a team-high 12 kills and collected nine digs in the match. Beaird followed with 10 kills in the four sets played. Ben Fincham talled eight kills on 25 swings and Erel Bardah had seven kills and five total blocks.
  • Abdirahman Ahmed distributed 26 assists in three sets played and Merritt Crowe collected 12 assists in the two sets for the Bobcats. Ben Ratliff-Becher added seven digs to his season totals.
FOR THE CRUSADERS:
  • Ethan Rehmann and Matthew Staskunas led Belmont Abbey with 13 kills apiece. Joseph Morris had 26 assists in three sets played and Alejandro Leon recorded seven digs in the contest.
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae heads to Lincoln Memorial tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference match with the Railsplitters starting at 2 p.m.
