BANNER ELK, N.C. – Lees-McRae College Senior Vice President for Enrollment Management / Assistant Men's Basketball Coach
Kevin Phillips was inducted into the Greater New Haven County (Connecticut) Basketball Hall of Fame on Thursday, June 27.
Phillips is one of 13 inductees in what is the inaugural class to the Hall of Fame. A four-year varsity starter, his high school career from 1983-1987 was a stellar one, and he holds 11 different records at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Connecticut. To this very day, Phillips is the all-time leading scorer in the city of Milford (five different high schools) with 1,902 career points. In addition to his scoring prowess, Phillips was also a fierce rebounder, pulling down 717 rebounds in his four-year career, good for second all-time at Law, and he is also fourth all-time in career assists.
"I'm truly blessed to have Kevin on our staff at Lees-McRae. He brings a wealth of basketball knowledge and is a tireless recruiter," said Head Men's Basketball Coach
Steve Hardin.
"Coach Phillips was an elite player which brings a unique experience and an understanding of the game for our student-athletes. Kevin has become a close friend, and I am proud that he is part of our Dunk Mountain family. Seeing Coach Phillips being inducted into the Hall of Fame is exciting for our program and staff. Much deserved!"
At 6'5", Phillips was able to play both inside and outside, leading the entire state of Connecticut in scoring in the 1985-86 season with 29.4 points per game. In that season, he was named CCIAC MVP, New Haven Register First-Team All-State, and USA Today Honorable Mention All-American. In the following year of 1986-87, Phillips averaged 27.5 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game in leading Jonathan Law to its only ever league championship (CCIAC). He was named CCIAC MVP for the second straight season, earned New Haven Register Second-Team All-State honors, and was named to the McDonald's All-American team as one of the top 250 high school players in the entire nation.
Perhaps most impressive of all, Phillips scored in double figures in 60 consecutive games starting early in his sophomore year and 79 out of 80 dating back to his freshman year. In his career, Phillips shot 55.1% from the field and nearly 80% from the free throw line. A consistent scorer, he still owns 34 of the top 50 individual game scoring efforts at Law, including 29 games in which he scored 33 or more points.
Phillips played collegiately for Division II power Sacred Heart University and then coached for many years at the high school, college, and professional levels. Next season will mark Phillips' third on Head Coach
Steve Hardin's staff at Lees-McRae.
