Women's Basketball Falls to Winston-Salem State, 76-75

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Winston-Salem State recorded the game-winning basket with three seconds remaining as Lees-McRae women's basketball fell to the Rams, 76-75, on Monday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Layla Tillery connected on a layup in the first 30 seconds to give the Bobcats the 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Lees-McRae extended its lead to 11 points off a three-point play by Kaylee Carson. The Bobcats led by four after the first 10 minutes.
  • Lees-McRae moved its advantage back to double digits with two free-throw makes from Nadiya Hairston. The Bobcats held a 45-33 lead after the first half.
  • The Bobcats continued to hold the double-digit margin after Carson collected a fastbreak layup with 3:27 to play in the third period. Winston-Salem State cut the lead to eight via a layup from Makayla Waleed at the end of the third.
  • WSSU gained its first lead of the evening off a layup from Jakaiya Mack at 68-67. The Bobcats regained the at 69-68 via a layup from Hairston.
  • Carson pushed the Bobcats in front by two points with 41 seconds remaining, but the Rams bounced back a layup from Waleed with three seconds left for the win.
  • Carson had a game-high 21 points, eight rebounds, and two assists tonight. Hairston followed with 19 points in 35 minutes of action. Sandra Mason and Kirsten Watt joined Carson and Hairston in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
