Flag Football Secures Two Victories on Senior Day

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae flag football team powered past Mount Olive, 60-0, and earned the 43-33 Conference Carolinas win over Barton on Tate Field on Saturday afternoon. 

GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 60, Mount Olive – 0
LOCATION: Tate Field – Banner Elk, North Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (8-6/6-1); Mount Olive (6-6/3-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae recorded 365 total yards on offensive and held Mount Olive to 107 offensive yards for the 60-0 win over the Trojans.
  • Makenzie Hicks threw for 271 yards on 20-26 and seven touchdowns for the Bobcats. Ava Rivera went 3-5 throwing and 59 passing yards. 
  • Natalia Hernández de León recorded 143 receiving yards on seven receptions and three touchdowns. Kennedy Vannoy followed with 93 yards on five receptions and three touchdowns. Ashley Alvarado had five catches for 49 yards and one touchdown.
  • Mackenzie Walker led the Bobcats on the defensive side of the ball with five flag pulls. Alvarado and Sydney Stigler had four flag pulls each. 
  • The Bobcats registered 28 points in the opening quarter and tallied 32 more points in the final three quarters for the 60-0 win.

FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 43, Mount St. Mary's – 33
LOCATION: Tate Field – Banner Elk, North Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (9-6/7-1); Barton (9-2/4-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae hosted Barton in a high-scoring affair between two of the best teams in Conference Carolinas.
  • Stigler got the Bobcats on the board first with a 20-yard interception return to the endzone for the 6-0 lead.
  • Barton answered with a scoring drive, but the Bobcats scored once again for the 12-6 lead. The Bobcats took the 18-6 and led 24-14 off a 47-yard touchdown pass to Vannoy in the first quarter.
  • Barton regained the lead with two scoring drives for the 27-24 lead, but Lees-McRae took the 30-27 lead into halftime.
  • Hicks found Vannoy again for a touchdown in the third quarter and built the nine-point lead over Barton. Hicks and the Bobcats continued once again and led 43-27 with 11:16 to play in the fourth. Barton scored once more and cut the deficit to 10, but Lees-McRae held for the 43-33 win on Saturday.
  • Hicks completed 30-43 with 351 passing yards and four touchdowns in the win. Tami Chatwood rushed for 69 yards and one touchdown. Vannoy led the receivers with 142 yards and two touchdowns. Hernández de León tallied 113 yards on nine receptions.
  • Walker collected 11 flag pulls and Vannoy followed with nine flag pulls.

Lees-McRae flag football concludes regular-season play on Wednesday, April 8 at Ferrum for games against Ferrum and Hollins starting at 4 p.m.
