Banner Elk, NC--The Lees-McRae women's tennis team got its first
win of the spring season over the visiting Wingate University
Bulldogs defeating them 7-2 in non-conference action Friday
afternoon. With the win the Lady Bobcats improve to 1-2 on the
season while the Bulldogs fall to 1-3.
In singles action the Lady Bobcats dominated winning five of the
six matches. Freshman Christine Vanard (Winston-Salem, NC) battled
to 6-4, 6-4 to win her first match of the year in the #1 spot,
while teammates Andrea Balaszova (Prague, Czech Republic) and
Ashley Mayers (Miami, FL) also grabbed their first wins of the
season. Amanda Nascimento (Vitoria, Brazil) gained her second
match win of the year this time playing in the #4 spot as did
sophomore Cameron Joyce (Lenoir, NC). At #6 Katie Hawkins (Old
Fort, NC) gritted it out before falling 6-3, 6-7 (5)(12-10).
The Lady Bobcats took the top two matches in doubles, while the
Bulldogs managed to take the win in third doubles position.
The Lady Bobcats will resume play Sunday afternoon when they
play host, this time to Shaw University. Play is set to begin at
3:00pm. Wingate will travel to John C. Smith University on
February 19th for their next match.
