Spartanburg, SC--The Lady Bobcats dominated host school Converse
College in Spartanburg, SC, taking the 9-0 sweep in women's tennis
action Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Bobcats improve to 2-2 on the
season while the Valkyries move to 1-1 on the year.
In singles action freshman Christine Vanard (Winston-Salem, NC)
took the match in the #1 spot improving her record to 2-2, and
classmate Andrea Balaszova (Prague, Czech Republic) gritted out a
three set match with Lindsey Wilson after taking the first 6-1 then
giving up the second 0-6, finally winning a 10-8 third set. Ashley
Mayers (Miami, FL) gave up only three games in the #3 spot to
clinch her second win of the year. Vitoria, Brazil native,
freshman Amanda Nascimento defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1 while
Cameron Joyce dominated in the #5 position, not giving up a single
game in her effort to gain her third win of the season. Junior
Katie Hawkins (Old Fort, NC) captured the win in the sixth spot
giving the Lady Bobcats the singles sweep for the afternoon.
The freshmen duo of Nascimento/Balaszova won the #1 doubles 8-3
while Joyce joined forces with Vanard to grab the 8-4 victory at
#2. With Mayers/Hawkins stepping up to take the 8-5 win in the
third position the Lady Bobcats completed not only the doubles
sweep, but a match sweep.
The Lady Bobcats will host Div I opponent Appalachian State
University on Friday afternoon at 3:00pm. Converse will face
Erskine College in Due West, SC Saturday afternoon.
