Banner Elk, NC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats dropped one to the
visiting Appalachian State University Mountaineers Friday
afternoon, falling 9-1 to their Division I opponent. The Lady
Bobcats now stand at 3-3 on the season while the Mountaineers even
their record at 1-1.
Christine Vanard (Winston-Salem, NC) captured her third straight
victory in the #1 position, her first against Div I competition,
outlasting ASU's Monica Tomas in a three set battle (4-6, 6-2,
10-8). Freshman classmate Andrea Balaszova (Prague, Czech
Republic) also put up a fight against Anja Gugger before falling
7-6, 6-4 in another tight match. ASU then proceeded to take the
next four singles matches from Lees-McRae.
The combination of freshman Amanda Nascimento (Vitoria,
Brazil) and Balaszova lost their first match of the year 8-4 to
Gugger/Amanda Cash, putting their record at 4-1 on the year while
the Vanard/Cameron Joyce (Lenoir, NC) duo also dropped their match
8-4. The Lady Bobcats saw their closest doubles match of the
afternoon from Katie Hawkins (Old Fort, NC)/Ashley Mayers (Miami,
FL) who battled to a score of 9-7 before succumbing to the
Mountaineers.
The Lady Bobcats will resume play Saturday afternoon at noon
when they host Milligan College. ASU will play at Presbyterian
College Saturday at 1:30pm.
