Banner Elk, NC--The Lees-McRae women's tennis team defeated
visiting Conference Carolinas opponent Coker College 5-1 in a
rain-shortened match. The Lady Bobcats now stand at 5-4 for the
season and 2-1 in league play. Coker falls to 0-7 overall (0-5
conference).
Christine
Vanard (a freshman from Winston-Salem, NC) continued her
winning ways, taking her seventh consecutive win today when she
defeated Rachel Lemar 6-2, 6-2. Prague, Czech Republic native Andrea
Balazsova dropped her match to Cassidy Spencer at the two
slot.
At number three Ashley
Mayers (Miami, FL) dominated her opponent, not allowing her a
single game, while Amanda
Nascimento (Vitoria, Brazil), playing in the fourth slot,
conceded only one game. Cameron
Joyce (Lenoir, NC) won 6-2, 6-2 and Katie
Hawkins (Old Fort, NC) battled in the closest contest of the
day, outlasting her foe 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 in a three set match.
The Lady Bobcats continue to show strength and consistency
through out the line up. Mayers, Nascimento, Joyce, and Hawkins
have all won three of their last four matches while Vanard is
undefeated in the last seven matches and is also unbeaten in
Conference Carolinas action.
Due to inclement weather the match was ended when Lees-McRae
took the fifth and match-deciding win from Coker.
The Lady Bobcats will hit the road for three away matches next
week, taking on regional opponent Lander University on Monday,
March 17th, ranked (#33) Conference Carolinas foe Erskine on
Tuesday, March 18th, and then closing the week by traveling to
Greenville, TN to compete against Tusculum College on Friday. Coker
will play host to Converse College on Tuesday, March 18th.
