Greenwood, SC--In women's tennis action the Lady Bobcats
traveled to Greenwood, SC to take on regional opponent Lander
University Monday afternoon. Despite several tight matches, the
Bearcats were able to defeat the Lady Bobcats 7-2. Lees-McRae's
record falls to 6-5 overall (2-1 Conference Carolinas) while Lander
improves to 7-3.
Christine
Vanard (Winston-Salem, NC) captured her eighth straight victory
at #1, this time over Fernanda Oliviera by a commanding score of
6-1, 6-3. Vanard then joined forces with Cameron
Joyce (Lenoir, NC) at #2 doubles to take the only doubles win
for the day as well with an 8-6 victory.
The Lady Bobcats had several close contests against the Bearcats
with #5 Joyce losing 7-5, 6-3 and #6 Katie
Hawkins (Old Fort, NC) falling 7-5, 6-4. The freshman #1 duo
of Amanda
Nascimento (Vitoria, Brazil) and Andrea
Balaszova (Prague, Czech Republic) clawed their way through a
tight match only to lose 9-8.
The team will resume play tomorrow, continuing their two-match
road trip to Erskine College in Due West, SC.
