Mars Hill, NC--The Lees-McRae women's tennis team won their
second match in three days defeating Mars Hill College 7-2 in
non-conference action Tuesday afternoon in Mars Hills, NC. The
Lady Bobcats improve to 9-9 on the year (3-4 in league play) while
Mars Hill slips to 3-11.
Freshman Christine Vanard (Winston-Salem, NC) once again set the
pace for the Lady Bobcats when she secured her fourth win in five
matches, winning a 6-1, 6-4 contest over Adriana Borda. Ashley
Mayers (Miami, FL), on a six game winning streak at No. 3, stepped
up to play the two slot, but fell 6-3, 6-4 to Patricia La Rovere.
Prague, Czech Republic native Andrea Balaszova won a 6-3, 6-2
contest over Kim Blythe while while freshman Amanda Nascimento
(Vitoria, Brazil) allowed Paola Aybar only one game (6-0, 6-1) in
the fourth flight. Cameron Joyce (Lenoir, NC) soundly defeated
Rachel Hall by a score of 6-1, 6-1, and Katie Hawkins was credited
with the default win at the sixth flight.
In doubles action, the Lady Bobcats blanked their opponents at
No. 2 doubles with Mayers/Vanard teaming up for the 8-0 win over
Hall/Aybar. The duo of Joyce/Nascimento fell 8-6 at the hands of
Mars Hills No. 1 doubles team of Blythe/La Rovere. Lees-McRae
gained the final point in doubles by default.
With two Conference Carolinas matches left in regular season the
Lady Bobcats will face Mt. Olive in a rescheduled match on
Thursday, April 10 at 2:00pm then host Barton College on Saturday,
April 12 at 2:00pm.
