HIGH POINT, N.C.-- Lees-McRae College's Gabriella Celi (11-4
overall, 6-1 conf.) has been selected as the NCAA Division II
Conference Carolinas women's tennis Player of the Week during week
number eight in the 2009 season.
The freshman sensation has led the Lees-McRae women's tennis
team to a 3-0 week with all three wins coming over ranked teams.
Lees-McRae landed atop the Conference Carolinas standings with two
upset wins over Limestone and Erskine.
Against Limestone, Celi won her singles match 6-1, 6-2 to give the
Lady Bobcats a 7-2 win over the No. 37 Lady Saints.
In their second match of the week, Celi and partner Christine
Vanard won their doubles match 8-3 to score the team's first
point. In singles Celi took down her opponent 6-4, 7-5 as the team
broke No. 24 Erskine's 57-conference match win streak with a 6-3
win.
In the team's final match against No. 27 Tusculum, Celi and Vanard
swept their doubles match 8-0. Celi won her singles match 6-3,
4-6, 6-1 and delivered the game-winning point as the team won
5-4.
Celi is unbeaten in singles play this year within the
conference.
