TRUCKEE, Calif. --- Junior Erica Zaveta
(Erwinna, Pa.) became Lees-McRae College's second rider to capture
an individual national championship this season, topping the podium
in the Division I cross country race on day one of the USA Cycling
2010 Collegiate Mountain Bike National Friday.
Zaveta led the way for the Bocbats as Lees-McRae turned in a
solid first day at the three-day event, crossing the finish line
nearly three seconds ahead of Fort Lewis College's Sage Wilderman
(Fraser, Colo.) to capture the individual national championship in
the Women's Division I Cross Country race.
Kira Shoemaker (Aiken, S.C.) and Cinthia Lehner (Greer, S.C.)
finished 17th and 22nd, respectively, to round out a solid team
performance in the women's cross country event.
Senior Bradford Perley (Kennebunkport, Maine) posted an
impressive fourth place finish in the Men's Division I Cross
Country event, while Brian Sheedy, Kerry Werner
(Birdsboro, Pa.), and Eric Thompson (Shoreview, Minn.) each placed
among the top 20 riders to put the Bobcats in great position in the
team standings.
Sheedy finished 11th, as Werner and Thompson placed 15th and
19th, respectively. Ezra Mullen (Nottingham, N.H.) rounded out the
Bobcats with a 24th-place finish.
Lees-McRae returns to the course on Saturday, as day two of the
USA Cycling 2010 Collegiate Mountain Bike National kicks off at the
Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort in Truckee, Calif.
