MADISON, WIS. -- Lees-McRae College's Carla Swart won the 2010
Women's Road Race making her the Division I Women's Road Race
National Champion on day one of the 2010 USA Collegiate Road
Nationals. The Bobcats cycling team has a 22-point lead after day
one for the team championship.
Swart's win was her third consecutive Women's Division I Road
Race National Champion title. In 2009 and 2008, Swart was also the
overall Women's Division I Individual Overall Road National
Champion and will look to continue that streak as the road
nationals continue.
The women's race was a 58-mile race that saw five Lady Bobcats
place in the top thirty. Swart's top place finish was followed by
Rachel Warner, who took 7th, Erica Zaveta, who finished 12, Cinthia
Lehner, who finished 26st, and Kira Shoemaker, who finished
28th.
On the men's side, the Bobcats tracked the grueling 73-mile road
course in rain with the temperatures in the low 40s. Joseph Welsh
was the top Lees-McRae finished with a ninth place finish. Kerry
Werner took 11th, and Bradford Perley finished 35th. Nathan Larson
and Nathan Trimble finished 38th and 44th respectively.
Lees-McRae is looking for its first national championship of the
season after finishing fifth at Track Nationals, third at Mountain
Bike Nationals and second at Cyclo-Cross Nationals.
