HARTSVILLE, S.C. --- The Coker College women's
tennis team tallied four wins in singles play to defeat Lees-McRae
College by a 6-3 margin in Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday
afternoon.
Coker's (2-1, 1-1 CC) Alyssa Blanchard (Irmo, S.C.) and
Stephanie Medley (Sumter, S.C.) edged Lees-McRae's (1-2, 1-1 CC)
Christine Vanard (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Lyndsay Peagram
(Greensboro, N.C.) by a 9-8 margin in the first doubles matchup, as
Cora Berna (Torrevieja, Spain) and Kendall Sigmon (Hilton Head
Island, S.C.) defeated Maria Andrade (Middle Village, N.Y.) and
Kelsey Hiatt (Mt. Airy, N.C.) by an 8-4 score to give Coker a 2-0
lead. Raven Harris (St. Pauls, N.C.) and Renee Roberson (Salisbury,
N.C.) defeated Coker's Faith Baxley (Mullins, S.C.) and Brittany
Yando (Sumter, S.C.) by an 8-5 margin in the third doubles tilt of
the day to cut the Cobra lead to 2-1.
Blanchard then kicked off singles play with a 6-4, 6-1 victory
over Vanard, before Peagram defeated Medley 6-2, 6-4 in the second
pairing to cut the margin to 3-2. Andrade pulled Lees-McRae even at
3-3 in the third singles matchup with a hard-fought 6-3, 2-6,
(10-6) win over Berna. Coker responded with three straight wins in
singles play, highlighted by a 6-2, 6-0 victory by Baxley over
Harris. Sigmon also defeated Hiatt by scores of 6-4, 4-6, and 7-5
in the fourth singles matchup, while Yando edged Roberson 6-4, 7-6
in the final pairing of the day.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Sunday when the Bobcats travel
to Asheville, N.C. to take on NCAA Division I UNC Asheville in a 3
p.m. matchup.
