ASHEVILLE, N.C. --- The UNC Asheville women's
tennis team swept Lees-McRae College, 7-0, in non-conference play
on Sunday afternoon.
Asheville (5-3) surrendered just one game in doubles play,
sweeping each of the three pairings to earn the point and take an
early 1-0 lead over the Bobcats (1-3).
In the first doubles matchup, Asheville's Stephanie Schon (San
Diego, Calif.) and Zoe Hamel (Paris, France) defeated Christine
Vanard (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Lyndsay Peagram (Greensboro, N.C.)
by an 8-1 margin. Devon Cavanaugh (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Britney
Cloer (Hendersonville, N.C.) then won their matchup with Maria
Andrade (Middle Village, N.Y.) and Kelsey Hiatt (Mt. Airy, N.C.),
8-0, as Jackie McGuirk (Raynham, Mass.) and Nicole Schon (San
Diego, Calif.) defeated Raven Harris (St. Pauls, N.C.) and Renee
Roberson (Salisbury, N.C.) by an 8-0 margin.
Cloer kicked off singles play with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win
over Vanard, before Stephanie Schon and Hamel swept Peagram and
Andrade with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories to clinch the deciding
points for Asheville. Nicole Schon followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory
over Hiatt, while Cavanaugh and McGuirk each tallied 6-0, 6-0 wins
over Harris and Roberson to close out the afternoon's action.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Wednesday when the Bobcats
travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. to take on Carson-Newman College at
2:30 p.m.
