WILSON, N.C. --- The Barton College women's
tennis team won four of six singles matches to rally for a 5-4 win
over Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday
afternoon.
Lees-McRae's (1-6, 1-3 CC) Christine Vanard (Winston-Salem,
N.C.) and Maria Andrade (Middle Village, N.Y.) opened the day with
a hard-fought 9-8 (7-1) victory over Mika Deane and Lindsey
Frederick, before Lyndsay Peagram (Greensboro, N.C.) and Kelsey
Hiatt (Mt. Airy, N.C.) shut out Lindsay Toth and Carol Fischer,
8-0, to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs' Jaime Galasso
and Francesca Del Pozo then cut the lead to 2-1 with a 9-8 (7-4)
victory over Raven Harris (St. Pauls, N.C.) and Renee Roberson
(Salisbury, N.C.).
Deane evened the score at 2-2 in the first singles flight,
earning a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Vanard. Peagram
responded with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Frederick before Andrade rallied
from a 6-0 first-set loss against Toth, responding with wins of 6-4
and 6-2 in the final two sets to earn the victory and give LMC a
4-2 lead.
Galasso answered with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Hiatt before Fischer
posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Roberson to even the tally at
4-4. Del Pozo then delivered the deciding point for the Bulldogs,
completing the rally with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Harris to give Barton
the 5-4 victory.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Sunday when the Bobcats host
Queens University of Charlotte to continue their conference slate
at 1 p.m.
