BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College
women's tennis team swept Converse College in Conference Carolinas
play on Wednesday afternoon to clinch the seventh seed in this
weekend's conference tournament.
Lees-McRae's (3-9, 3-6 CC) top-flight duo of Christine Vanard
(Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Maria Andrade (Middle Village, N.Y.)
opened the afternoon with an 8-4 victory over Converse's (4-13, 2-7
CC) tandem of Olivia Self and Lindsey Kelly, before Lyndsay Peagram
(Greensboro, N.C.) and Kelsey Hiatt (Mount Airy, N.C.) defeated
Taylor Bland and Stella Ford by a tally of 8-5. Renee Roberson
(Salisbury, N.C.) and Raven Harris (St. Pauls, N.C.) then swept
Francesca Mayer and Becky Elam, 8-0, to give the Bobcats a 3-0
lead.
Vanard opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Self before
Peagram knocked off Kelly by a tally of 6-0, 6-1 to deliver the
deciding point for the Bobcats. Andrade then defeated Bland at No.
3 singles, 6-3, 6-0, as Hiatt registered a 6-0, 7-5 win over Ford
in the fourth flight. At No. 5 singles, Harris built an early 2-1
lead before her opponent, Mayer, retired. Roberson then closed out
the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Elam.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Friday as the No. 7 seed in
the Conference Carolinas Tournament, hosted by Erskine College, in
Sumter, S.C. at the Palmetto Tennis Center. The Bobcats will take
on second-seeded Queens University of Charlotte in Friday's
quarterfinal round.
