BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Belmont Abbey College
women's tennis team took two of three matches in doubles play and
posted three victories in singles action en route to a 7-2
Conference Carolinas win over Lees-McRae College on Saturday
afternoon.
The Bobcats honored their senior class prior to the match,
celebrating the careers of Lyndsay Peagram (Greensboro, N.C.),
Kelsey Hiatt (Mt. Airy, N.C.), and Raven Harris (St. Pauls,
N.C.).
Belmont Abbey's (4-10, 3-6 CC) duo of Kirstie Jenkins and
Katharine Miller opened the afternoon with a hard-fought 9-8
victory over Lees-McRae's (1-13, 1-10 CC) tandem of Peagram and
Samantha Wohlers (Windsor, Ontario, Canada), before Hiatt and
Harris answered with an 8-6 win against Paige French and Shannon
Ramsey. The Abbey was awarded the third doubles flight by
default.
Jenkins kicked off singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over
Peagram, as Wohlers rallied for a hard-fought 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 win
against Miller in the second flight. French defeated Hiatt, 6-2,
6-2 in the third flight, as Ramsey registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over
Harris at No. 4. The Abbey was awarded the fifth and sixth flights
by default.
Lees-McRae is expected to return one letter-winner (Wohlers)
from this year's squad following the graduation of Peagram, Hiatt,
and Harris.
