Softball falls twice to Lander in non-conference twin bill

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Sarah Beth Thomas and Hannah Foster went a combined 3 for 7 with a home run and two RBIs in game two, but it was not enough as host Lander held the visiting Bobcats to only three runs on six hits en route to clinching the non-conference doubleheader this afternoon.
 
GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lander – 3, Lees-McRae – 1
LOCATION: Doug Spears Field – Greenwood, South Carolina
RECORDS: Lander (12-7), Lees-McRae (5-20)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Foster and Christian Welch both registered a hit in game one, with Lauren Ritchie tallying a run scored.
  • Lander opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on a back-to-back sacrifice fly and fielder's choice with two runners in scoring position to give the Bearcats an early 2-0 lead.
  • After the Bearcats extended their lead to 3-0 with a fielder's choice in the bottom of the third, the Bobcats cut into the deficit with a fielder's choice by Ritchie, who later scored on a double by Welch.
  • Lander held Lees-McRae in check for the final two innings to preserve the win.
  • Raygan Rensing was credited with the loss in the circle for the Bobcats, giving up three runs on five hits in six innings of work.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Morgan Watson went 2 for 3 with a run scored to lead the Bearcats in game one.
  • Barbara Cook earned the win, giving up one run on two hits in seven innings of work.
 
GAME #2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lander – 7, Lees-McRae – 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Thomas went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Foster finished 1 for 3 with a solo home run to center field in game two.
  • Addyson Ikard also registered a hit, while Mallory Myers drew three walks and tallied a run scored.
  • Lander opened the scoring for the second-consecutive game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and pushed the lead to four with a solo home run in the bottom of the third.
  • Lees-McRae trimmed the lead to 4-1 with a single by Thomas in the top of the fifth, before the Bearcats scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the frame.
  • The Bobcats closed out the game's scoring on a solo home run to center field by Foster in the top of the sixth.
  • Charlsy Traylor and Jenna Bullard gave up a combined five earned runs on 10 hits in six innings of work, while tallying seven strikeouts.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Watson went 3 for 4 in game two with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Liz Gollins scattered two runs on four hits to earn the game two victory for the Bearcats.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats will return to Conference Carolinas play when they visit Chowan on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
