Three Bobcats score in double figures as Women’s Basketball uses fast start to defeat Converse, 73-48

BANNER ELK, N.C.Destiny Johnson, MaKayla Smith, and Jala Holloman all scored in double figures as the Lees-McRae women's basketball team shot nearly 50 percent from the field and 57 percent from distance, while also finishing with a 47-30 advantage in rebounding, en route to a 73-48 victory over visiting Converse in the Conference Carolinas action this evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Johnson shot 9 of 13 from the field to lead the Bobcats in scoring with 19 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to notch her fourth-career double-double.
  • Smith tallied 13 points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals, while Holloman shot 4 of 7 from distance en route to 12 points.
  • Malikah Meyers added eight points and five rebounds, with Jessica Henderson chipping in seven points and five assists.
  • Lees-McRae sprinted out of the gates by scoring 20 of the first 24 points in the contest, shooting over 60 percent from the field, to grab the early momentum.
  • The Bobcats continues the run in the second frame by extending the lead to 33-12 on a fastbreak layup by Smith with 3:34 left in the first half.
  • Lees-McRae used a three-point field goal by Holloman in the closing second to take a 42-18 lead at halftime.
  • The Bobcats outscored the Valkyries 31-30 in the second half to clinch the conference win.
  • Lees-McRae held a 20-10 advantage in points off turnovers and an 8-4 edge in second chance points.
  • The Bobcats shot 8 of 14 from distance and 5 of 8 from the free throw line in the contest.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Sydney Wilson finished with a team-high 15 points to lead the Valkyries, while Zahra Cross chipped in seven points and four assists.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcat will hit the road on Saturday as they visit Chowan for a 2 p.m. Conference Carolinas contest.
