GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Nicholas Marrone of the Lees-McRae esports took home the second annual esports Conference Carolinas FIFA Invitational on Saturday afternoon after defeating Barton's Kieran Guillory in two games in the best-of-3 tournament. The championship is the first-ever in the program's history.
Marrone, a Lancaster, Pennsylvania native, played as Paris Saint-Germain throughout tournament and picked up two 2-0 victories on his way to the finals. In the championship finale, Marrone picked up the 2-1 victory in the first game before collecting a 6-1 win in the second game.
On his approach and winning the championship, Marrone said, "It was actually really fun. I have not played in a FIFA tournament before, and FIFA is a weird game where it can go 50-50." Marrone noted the difference between the first and second game was, "I put the ball in the net. I created the same chances (in the first contest) and then I started creating chances in the first half (of the second contest) and scored three in the first half."
