BASYE, Va. - The Lees-McRae ski & snowboard team, under head coach
Aaron Maas, traveled back to Bryce Resort on Feb. 11-12 to race under the lights as they wrap up the Alpine portion of their conference season. The team competed in Slalom on Friday night, followed by Giant Slalom on Saturday evening.
The women's snowboard team kicked things off in dramatic fashion. Led by senior
Lili Bauer the ladies swept the podium and then some. Freshman
Sarah Streett came in second, junior
Lindsey Fletcher was third and freshman
Lily Kamp solidified the sweep with a fourth-place finish. The team has been close to sweeping in several events this season, but this was the first time they were able to put it all together and go 1-2-3-4.
The men's snowboard team came close to their own sweep with senior
Alex Broussard and sophomore
Kenneth Stanford going first and second respectively. Not far behind, Freshman
Ryland Bagbey and
Chance Markland came in fifth and seventh. Senior
Ty Kirssin landed in the ninth spot giving the team 5 of the top 10 places once again.
On Saturday, freshman
Corey Jackson put together one of his best performances of the season finishing in sixth place overall in the Skier Giant Slalom event. Jackson has done well enough in his first season to qualify for Regionals. Quite a performance from our freshman student-athlete.
While the ladies didn't repeat their sweep from Friday, they still managed to dominate the Slalom event on Saturday. Taking four of the top seven spots, the team went 1-2 with Bauer claiming the top spot and Kamp right behind her. Fletcher came in fourth and Streett claimed the seventh spot for another outstanding performance.
The men's snowboard team finished in familiar fashion with Broussard and Stanford once again claiming the top two spots on the leader board. This was Broussard's fourth first-place finish of the season and the third in a row where Stanford took second right behind him. Bagbey, freshman
Aiden Garner and Kirssin went 6-7-8 to claim five of the top eight places for the event.
The team will travel to Lynchburg, Va. next to compete in their final Freestyle competition of the conference season.
