PITTSBURG, Kan. – Senior
Brian Sims Jr. opened the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas by sprinting to a time of 47.36 in the preliminary round of 400-meter dash, which ranks fifth overall and broke his previous Lees-McRae school record, to officially qualify for the finals in the event slated for tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. (EST).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sims Jr. finished fifth overall and third in his respective heat with a time of 47.36, which broke his previous school record by 1.12 seconds and ranked within the top-eight to qualify for the final race tomorrow evening.
- His time was also .07 seconds faster than Sulaimane Bangura (Emmanuel) to rank as the fastest Conference Carolinas student-athlete going into the final round.
- Channing Phillips (Ashland) posted a time of 47.07 to rank first in the 400-meter dash following the preliminary round.
UP NEXT:
Sims Jr. will compete for the NCAA Division II National Championship title in the 400-meter dash tomorrow at 7 p.m. Zai Fraser will open the day by competing for a national championship in the triple jump at 4:05 p.m.
