INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Track & Field Committee announced the participants for the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships on Tuesday evening, with Lees-McRae senior
Brian Sims Jr. and sophomore
Zai Fraser being selected to compete. Sims Jr. will seek a national title in the 400-meter dash, while Fraser, who represented Lees-McRae at the outdoor championships last May, will look to capture the national title in the triple jump.
Sims Jr., a senior history major, enters the meet with the 13th-best qualifying time of 47.72 meters, which was the time her ran at the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field Championships en route to clinching the conference title in the event and capturing All-Conference Carolinas honors. The senior broke the Lees-McRae record in the 400-meter dash in the preliminary round and ranks third in the Southeast Region this season.
Fraser, a sophomore business administration major, enters the meet with the seventh-best qualifying mark of 12.47 meters, which she hit at the Appalachian State Open Indoor Meet back on Dec. 4 and broke her own school record in the process. The sophomore leads the Southeast Region in the triple jump this season and will be returning to a national championship meet for the second consecutive semester, after reaching the outdoor championships last May. Fraser placed 15th in the triple jump competition in the outdoor championships with a mark of 11.92 meters.
Sims Jr. will first compete in the preliminary rounds of the 400-meter dash on Friday, March 11 at 4 p.m. to see if he will qualify for the final round on Saturday, March 12 at 6 p.m. Fraser will compete in the finals of the triple jump at 3:05 p.m. on Saturday, March 12. All competitions will be held at the Robert W. Plaster Center on the campus of Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.
