Softball plates 29 runs on 23 hits in non-conference sweep of Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, N.C.Megan Powell earned the game one victory and posted her second multi-homerun game of the season, while Aliyah Compton and Hannah Foster collected a combined eight hits, six RBIs, eight stolen bases, and 10 runs scored, as the Lees-McRae softball team tallied a combined 29 runs on 23 hits to clinch the non-conference twin bill at Johnson C. Smith on Saturday.
 
GAME #1 BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Compton went 3 for 3 from the plate with an RBI, three stolen bases, and four runs scored to pace the Bobcats in the opening game.
  • Powell went 2 for 3 with two homeruns, three RBIs, and two runs scored, while Emma Jackson was 2 for 4 with a double, a triple, and three RBIs.
  • Jordyn Scott was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, with Julie Gast, Madison Rowe, Hannah Foster, Kasey Spease, Lauren Ritchie, and Rylie Webster also collected hits in game one.
  • Lees-McRae opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Powell connected on the first of her two homeruns to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead and Jackson hit an two-RBI double that scored both Scott and Ritchie to extend the lead to 4-0.
  • Webster opened with a triple in the top of the second and scored on a single by Compton to push the lead to 5-0.
  • Ritchie scored Compton from third on an single and Gast scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 7-0 at the end of the top of the second inning.
  • The Bobcats scored their eighth run in the top of the third inning on an RBI double by Gast and pushed the lead to 9-1 on a lead-off homerun by Powell in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Lees-McRae closed out their scoring in the top of the fifth as Rowe and Spease both hit RBI doubles to give the Bobcats an 11-1 lead, while Scott singled to score both Meredith Summey and Spease and Jackson tripled to score Scott to close out the Bobcats' scoring.
  • Powell gave up only one earned run on one hit and struck out seven batters en route to clinching the win in the circle for the Bobcats.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Emma Garr-Carter finished with the lone hit for the Golden Bulls.
  • Ali Alvarado gave up 13 earned runs on 15 hits in the circle for Johnson C. Smith

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Foster went 3 for 3 from the plate with a double, four RBIs, two stolen bases and three runs scored to pace the Bobcats in the later game.
  • Rowe tallied a double, three RBIs and a runs scored, while Summey went 1 for 2 with two RBIs from the dish.
  • Compton went 1 for 1 with an RBI, three stolen bases, three runs scored, and three walks, with Gast and Jackson also collecting hits in the later game.
  • Lees-McRae sprinted out of the gates in the later game as Foster singled home Compton for the first run, Powell grounding out to score Gast for the second run, Foster scoring on a wild pitch, Scott scoring on a Johnson C. Smith error, and Compton collected an RBI on a walk to give the Bobcats an early 5-0 lead.
  • The Bobcats posted a nine-run top of the second inning to pust the game out of reach.
  • Foster opened the inning by scoring on a wild pitch for the Bobcats' sixth run, while Rowe hit a two-RBI double to score both Scott and Jackson to extend the lead to 8-0.
  • Abby West scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 9-0, Ritchie stole home for the 10th run, Foster hit a two-RBI double to score both Gast and Compton to extend the lead to 12-0.
  • Summey closed out the Lees-McRae scoring as she hit a two-RBI double to score Spease and Foster.
  • Johnson C. Smith closed their lone run in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Jada Wilson collected the win in the circle for the Bobcats, surrendering only one run on two hits in three innings of work.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Four Golden Bulls collected hits in game two, with Moya Jones and Ali Alvarado giving up 15 earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work for Johnson C. Smith.
 
NOTEWORTHY:
  • Aliyah Compton's three stolen bases in each of the two games against Johnson C. Smith are the most by a Bobcat in a single game since 2012.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcat will travel to Wise, Virginia on Friday, March 11 for a non-conference twin bill against UVA Wise starting at 2 p.m.
