Softball falls short twice against Belmont Abbey in Conference Carolinas doubleheader

BELMONT, N.C – Aliyah Compton collected her team-leading 22nd stolen base in the opening game, which ranks second in program history in stolen bases for a single season, but it was not enough as host Belmont Abbey used a three-run inning in each game to clinch the doubleheader sweep of the visiting Bobcats in the Conference Carolinas action this afternoon.
 
GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Belmont Abbey – 5; Lees-McRae – 0  
LOCATION: Crusader Field – Belmont, North Carolina
RECORDS: Belmont Abbey (21-9/8-5), Lees-McRae (14-19/8-7)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Madison Rowe went 2 of 3 from the plate to pace the Bobcats in the early game, while Rylie Webster, Emma Jackson, Aliyah Compton, and Jordyn Scott also collected hits in game one.
  • Compton also finished with a sacrifice hit and a stolen base.
  • Belmont Abbey opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with three runs on three hits to grab momentum early.
  • Lees-McRae threatened to cut into the deficit in the top of the third with runners on second and third, but a final out held the score at 3-0.
  • The Crusaders tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning and bottom of the sixth inning to close out the game's scoring.
  • Both Jackson and Compton singled in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough as Belmont Abbey clinched the win in the opening game.
  • Megan Powell and Jasmine Fong gave up a combined five earned runs on 10 hits in six innings of work.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Three Crusaders finished with multiple hits in the early game, while Abby Carver pitched a six-hit shutout in the circle for Belmont Abbey.

LOCATION: Crusader Field – Belmont, North Carolina
RECORDS: Belmont Abbey (22-9/9-5), Lees-McRae (14-20/8-8)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Webster, Scott, and Hannah Foster all collected hits in the later game to pace the Bobcats, with Scott hitting a double and Foster finishing with an RBI.
  • Powell and Belmont Abbey's Alannah Browne were locked into a pitcher's dual for the first four innings, with a single by Webster in the top of the fourth inning being the game's first hit.
  • Lees-McRae opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning as Julie Gast walked and then later scored on a single by Foster to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
  • The Crusaders responded with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to shift momentum.
  • Belmont Abbey held the Bobcats in check in the top of the seventh inning to clinch the conference win.
  • Powell surrendered three earned runs on three hits in six innings of work for the Bobcats.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Three Crusaders posted a hit in the later game, led by Cameron Cooper with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Browne gave up only one earned run on three hits in the circle for Belmont Abbey
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats will close out the Conference Carolinas weekend as they visit Mount Olive tomorrow for a twin bill starting at 12 p.m.
