Softball Goes 1-1 Against West Virginia State on Saturday

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Allie Johnston homered in the first game as Lees-McRae picked up a 3-2 win over West Virginia State in game one. The Yellow Jackets earned the split on Saturday with a 4-3 win in the second game.

GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 3; West Virginia State – 2
LOCATION: Myrtle Beach Sports Complex – Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (5-14), West Virginia State (4-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Abby Hatley led off the bottom of the first with a double to left field and Johnston scored Hatley with an RBI single to left field.
  • WVSU tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. The Bobcats regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run from Johnston. Avery Walston scored on the play.
  • The Yellow Jackets recorded one more run in the seventh, but Hayley Lawing earned the complete-game win for the Bobcats in the circle.
  • Lawing tallied three strikeouts and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks on the day.
  • Johnston led the Bobcats with three hits, three RBIs, and one run scored in the contest.  Hatley, Rylee Konowalchuk, and Walston recorded one hit each for Lees-McRae.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • West Virginia State jumped to a 3-0 lead after three runs in the third inning. The Yellow Jackets tacked on one more run in the fourth inning.
  • Hatley homered in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 4-2. Taylor Beurrier got the Bobcats within one run off an RBI double to left field that scored Destiny Brown. McKenzie Presson ended the rally with a flyout to center field.
  • Ellie Hale suffered the loss for Lees-McRae after going three and one-thirds innings. Hale allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and one walk. Jaden Clark came in relief of Hale and scattered three hits in three and two-thirds innings pitched.
  • Hatley went 3-4 from the plate with two RBIs and one run scored. Beurrier collected two hits in the second game. Brown and Johnston followed with one hit apiece for the Bobcats.

UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae continues its spring break trip tomorrow morning with contests against Malone and Pikeville. The Bobcats face Malone starting at 9 a.m.
