Softball Concludes Weekend with 11-10 Win at UVA Wise

WISE, Va. – Allie Johnston recorded six RBIs in two games today as Lees-McRae concluded the two-day tournament at UVA Wise with a victory over the Highland Cavaliers, 11-10.

GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Ursuline – 8, Lees-McRae – 7
LOCATION: Bill Gatton Field – Wise, Virginia
RECORDS: Ursuline (3-0); Lees-McRae (5-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Taylor Beurrier opened the day with a triple down the right field line and scored on a RBI single via Johnston.
  • Ursuline took the 3-1 lead after two innings, but Lees-McRae knotted the score at 3-3 with two runs in the third inning. Kierstin Kemper started the inning with a leadoff walk and scored on a wild pitch. Abby Hatley drew a walk and scored on the throw for the 3-3 tie.
  • The Bobcats tied the contest at 6-6 with an RBI single from Haylea Huffines in the sixth inning and Johnston drove in Hatley for the 7-6 lead.
  • Ursuline used a walk-off two-run home run from Heidi Earl in the bottom of the seventh for the 8-7 win.
  • Emma Bigby was issued the loss in the circle after allowing three runs (three earned) in two and two-thirds innings for the Bobcats.
  • Johnston went 2-3 from the plate with two RBIs and one walk. Beurrier and Maycee Tickle joined Johnston with two hits each.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae bounced back in the second game on Saturday with a comeback 11-10 win over UVA Wise.
  • Johnston scored Beurrier on an RBI groundout and Tickle drove in Hatley on an RBI double for the 2-0 lead. Tickle scored on an RBI single from Huffines three batters later.
  • The Bobcats pushed ahead with five runs in the top of sixth after a three-run home run from Kemper. Hatley followed with a single through the right side that scored Beurrier on the play. Eaddy brought in Johnston on an RBI double to the outfield.
  • Lees-McRae scored two insurance runs in the seventh for the 11-7 lead. Johnston brought home Beurrier and Huffines after a single up the middle.
  • Georgia McConnell was able to record the final out after UVA Wise made the score interesting at 11-10 in the final frame.
  • Johnston led the Bobcats at the plate with three hits, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Kemper followed with three RBis on her home run. Huffines had four hits in four plate appearances and Hatley registered two hits and one walk in the game.
  • Bigby earned the win in the circle for Lees-McRase after going two full innings of relief and allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits.
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae opens Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday, March 3 at Converse in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
