VASS, N.C. --- Thomas Buchanan (Bakersville,
N.C.) fired the low round of the Conference Carolinas Championship
Tournament on Tuesday, carding a three-under-par 69 to vault into
third place on the individual leader board and lead the Lees-McRae
College men's golf team to the program's highest-ever finish in the
conference tournament.
Buchanan posted the only round of the tournament under 70,
vaulting from a tie for 15th at the beginning of the day with a
third round of 69 to finish in a tie for third, equaling the
highest individual finish in program history. For his efforts,
Buchanan earned a spot on the Conference Carolinas all-Tournament
Team after pacing the Bobcats to a seventh-place finish in the team
competition. James Madison (Newland, N.C.) carded a 79 to finish in
a tie for 24th with a three-day total of 235 (83+73+79), while
Michael Corboy (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) finished in a
tie for 30th with a tournament total of 236 (79+79+78).
Chase Watson (Newland, N.C.) finished 39th after carding a final
round of 79, concluding the tournament with a three-day total of
242 (86+77+79). Wrenn Johnson (Boone, N.C.) placed 45th with a
three-day total of 249, carding rounds of 83, 87, and 79.
Queens University of Charlotte won the team title by 10 strokes
over Coker College, which equaled Queens' final round of 296 to
vault past third-place Barton College. Queens posted rounds of 297,
301, and 296 to finish with a total of 894, followed by Coker
(307+301+296=904) and Barton (301+301+308=910). Pfeiffer University
(309+300+304) finished fourth with a three-day total of 913, while
Belmont Abbey College (309+299+311) rounded out the top five at
919.
Mount Olive College (318+303+310) finished sixth with a
three-day total of 931, edging Lees-McRae by one stroke as the
Bobcats posted a tournament total of 932 after rounds of 323, 304,
and 305. Limestone College (313+304+317) and St. Andrews
Presbyterian College (318+301+315) finished in a tie for eighth
with identical three-day totals of 934, as Erskine College finished
10th with a tournament total of 973 after carding rounds of 345,
312, and 316.
Lees-McRae is expected to return three letter-winners from this
year's squad, including all-tournament selection Buchanan. The
Bobcats posted the program's best-ever finish in the conference
tournament, placing seventh.
