BANNER ELK, N.C. – Four Bobcats finished with multiple hits in the non-conference doubleheader this afternoon, but it wasn't enough as Carson-Newman used a three-run inning in each of the two games to clinch the twin bill against the visiting Lees-McRae softball team.
GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Carson-Newman – 5; Lees-McRae – 2
LOCATION: The Vick – Jefferson City, Tennessee
RECORDS: Carson-Newman (4-1), Lees-McRae (0-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Jordyn Scott went 2 for 2 from the plate with a solo homerun, while Hannah Foster went 2 for 3 from the dish to pace the Bobcats in game one.
- Emma Jackson and Aliyah Compton both also tallied a hit, while Julie Gast finished with an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
- Lees-McRae opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Compton led-off the game with a triple to left center and Gast followed that up with a sacrifice fly to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
- Carson-Newman evened the score in the bottom of the first on a infield groundout.
- Scott reclaimed the lead for the Bobcats on a lead-off homerun to left center field in the top of the second.
- The Eagles responded with a three-run bottom of the third inning to push the lead to 4-2.
- Carson-Newman closed out the game's scoring with a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- Megan Powell surrendered four earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work to be credited with the loss in the circle for the Bobcats.
FOR THE FOES:
- Hayden Dye went 2 for 3 from the plate with a game-high three RBIs to pace the Eagles.
- Sara King gave up only two earned runs on six hits to clinch the win.
GAME #2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Carson-Newman – 5; Lees-McRae – 3
LOCATION: The Vick – Jefferson City, Tennessee
RECORDS: Carson-Newman (5-1), Lees-McRae (0-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Gast and Jackson both went 2 for 4 from the plate and combined for three RBIs to lead the Bobcats in the second game.
- Compton went 1 for 3 from the dish with a run scored, while both Jada Wilson and Lauren Ritchie tallied a hit in the later game.
- After a scoreless first innings, Lees-McRae opened the scoring for the second consecutive game on a lead-off homerun by Jackson in the top of the second.
- Carson-Newman responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on three hits to reclaim the lead.
- The Bobcats cut the deficit back to 3-2 in the top of the fifth as Jackson scored Compton from third base on a ground out to the pitcher.
- Lees-McRae evened the score at 3-3 in the top of the sixth as Gast doubled to left center that scored Meredith Summey.
- The Eagles closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as they tallied two runs on two hits to extend the lead to 5-3.
- Wilson and Raygan Rensing combined to give up five runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
FOR THE FOES:
- Emily Harris and Dye both went 2 for 3 from the plate and combined for three RBIs and two runs scored to pace the Eagles in the later game.
- Syerra Rogers and King combined to only give up two earned runs on six hits.
