NEWBERRY, S.C. – Jada Wilson held a perfect game late into the first game against Fairmont State this afternoon as Lees-McRae softball went 1-1 on the day with a 3-0 win against the Fighting Falcons.
GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 3; Fairmont State – 0
LOCATION: Smith Road Complex – Newberry, South Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (7-2/0-0), Fairmont State (2-5/0-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wilson faced the minimum through six and one-thirds pitched as the Valle Crucis, North Carolina native only surrendered two hits and struck out seven batters in the complete-game shutout over Fairmont State. Wilson now has four complete-game shutouts on the season and lowered her season earned run average to 0.21.
- Hannah Foster provided the first run for the Bobcats in the bottom of the second with a solo home run and Rebecca Grovdahl followed with a home run blast over the left field wall.
- Julie Gast scored the third run for Lees-McRae in the fifth off a Fairmont State throwing error. Wilson was able to work around two one-out singles and earned her fourth win of the season.
FOR THE FIGHTING FALCONS:
- Emily Riggs and Hannah Workman combined for the two hits for Fairmont State and Shelby Reed was handed the loss after going 3.1 innings pitched while giving up two runs (two earned) on five hits.
GAME #2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 0; Newberry – 3
LOCATION: Smith Road Complex – Newberry, South Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (7-3/0-0), Newberry (7-5/0-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Newberry plated three runs in the home half of the sixth inning and did not allow Lees-McRae to score in the top of the seventh for the 3-0 win on Sunday.
- Megan Powell tallied the loss for the Bobcats in the circle after coming in relief of Grayson Buckner in the fourth inning. Powell went three full innings while giving up three runs (zero earned) on four hits and three walks.
- Gast, Jordyn Scott, and Abby West collected hits for the Bobcats in the contest.
FOR THE WOLVES:
- Lindsey Foster held Lees-McRae scoreless in her start in the circle as she went 6.1 innings and struck out five Bobcats. Olivia Chestnut recorded her second save of the season while grabbing the final two outs of the game.
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae heads to Catawba for a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 23. The first pitch from Salisbury is scheduled for 1 p.m.
