Buckner Launches Two Home Runs in Game Two as Softball Earns Split at Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – Julie Gast went 5-6 on the day and added four runs-batted in game two as the Lees-McRae softball team went 1-1 on the day with a 14-1 victory over Catawba in the second game of the doubleheader. Grayson Buckner recorded two home runs and secured the win in the circle for the Bobcats.

GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 2; Catawba – 4  
LOCATION: Whitley Field Field – Salisbury, North Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (7-4/0-0), Catawba (8-5/0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Jada Wilson took the loss for Lees-McRae in game one as Wilson went three complete innings while surrendering two runs (two earned) on five hits. Megan Powell came in relief and went three innings while striking out five batters but allowed five walks in the appearance.
  • Powell doubled down the left field line in the top of third and Gast scored on the play to even the score at one run.
  • Catawba rallied in their home half of the third with a run and tacked on a third run in the fourth inning.
  • Hannah Foster scored off a ground out by Rylie Webster in sixth to cut the Indians' lead to one run, but Catawba collected one more run in the bottom of the sixth to win 4-2.
  • Gast and Powell had two hits apiece and Buckner, Foster, Webster and Shelby Knaak had one hit each.

FOR THE INDIANS:
  • Riley Tucker collected two hits in game one and drove in two runs for Catawba. Five more Indians had one hit each and Alexandra Baquire earned the win on the start with five complete innings while striking out five Bobcats in the afternoon.

GAME #2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 14; Catawba – 1  
LOCATION: Whitley Field Field – Salisbury, North Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (8-4/0-0), Catawba (8-6/0-0)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae scored six runs in the second inning after a two-RBI single by Gast started the scoring rally. 
  • Powell doubled the lead for the Bobcats after a two-out double to left field as Gast and Jordyn Scott touched home plate on the play. Buckner collected the next RBI with a single through the left side and Foster brought home the sixth run of the inning with a two-out single through the left side.
  • The Bobcats then tallied eight more runs in the fifth run after Buckner led off the fifth with a solo home run over the left field fence. Scott followed Buckner with a two-run home run and Buckner capped the inning with a two-run home run over the center field wall.
  • Lees-McRae took the 14-1 victory with Buckner picking up the win in the circle after throwing five complete innings and having one strikeout. Gast and Buckner each had four RBIs in the contest and Scott followed with three.

FOR THE INDIANS:
  • Savannah Beaver was handed the loss after going 1.2 innings on the day while allowing four runs (four earned) on one hit.
 
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae will now play Emory & Henry in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 25.
