Softball Earns 6-4 Victory in Second Game at Tusculum; Splits Series with Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, TENN. – McKenzie Presson recorded the go-ahead two-run double in the top of the sixth in the second game of today's doubleheader as Lees-McRae softball earned a split with Tusculum on Tuesday.

GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Tusculum – 10; Lees-McRae – 1
LOCATION: Red Edmonds Field – Greeneville, Tennessee
RECORDS: Tusculum (9-7), Lees-McRae (3-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Bobcats recorded the first run of the game with Hannah Foster scoring on a fielding error by Tusculum. The Pioneers answered with one run in the bottom of the first after a solo home run.
  • The score remained even until Tusculum tallied a run in fourth and registered eight runs in the fifth for the 10-1 victory.
  • Lonna Addison suffered the loss in the circle for Lees-McRae after allowing 10 runs (10 earned) on nine hits and two walks. Addison recorded four strikeouts in the outing.
  • Foster and Lauren Ritchie tallied the hits for the Bobcats in the first game of the day.

FOR THE PIONEERS:
  • Emily Sappington earned her third of the season with six strikeouts in five innings pitched.
  • Ellie Alvarez and Claire Smeltzer led the Pioneers at the plate with three RBIs apiece.

GAME #2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 6; Tusculum – 4
LOCATION: Red Edmonds Field –Greeneville, Tennessee
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (4-8), Tusculum (9-8)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae bounced back in the second game of today's doubleheader with 6-4 win over Tusculum.
  • The Pioneers scored four runs in the bottom of the third, but the Bobcats answered with three in the top of the fourth.
  • Brooks Eaddy doubled down the left field line and Allie Johnston touched home plate. Shelby Knaak continued the rally with a RBI single up the middle and Eaddy scored after a throwing error from the Pioneers.
  • The Bobcats continued their scoring in the sixth with a leadoff single from Ritchie. Taylor Beurrier singled to center field with two outs and McKenzie Presson doubled to right-center  to give the Bobcats the lead at 5-4.
  • Lees-McRae had the bases loaded in the seventh and added an insurance run after Knaak was hit by the pitch. Foster touched home on the play for the Bobcats' 6-4 win on Tuesday.
  • Knaak and Presson guided the Bobcats with two RBIs apiece and Ritchie had two hits on the day.
  • Logan Zephir earned her first career victory after going two and thirds inning pitched on the day while only zero runs on three hits and two strikeouts. Addison delivered the save for the Bobcats.
FOR THE PIONEERS:
  • Gabi Nicholson had three RBIs on a three-run home run for Tusculum and Sammy Jimenez collected the other RBI with one hit in the contest.
 
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae heads to Augusta, Georgia for a doubleheader with Augusta on Monday, March 4 starting at 1 p.m.
