Softball Starts Season with Tough Outings at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – McKenzie Presson and Lauren Ritchie each registered home runs in today's doubleheader, but Lees-McRae softball dropped both games at Newberry in its season opener.

GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Newberry – 11; Lees-McRae – 3
LOCATION: Smith Road Complex – Newberry, South Carolina
RECORDS: Newberry (1-0), Lees-McRae (0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • McKenzie Presson recorded a solo home run in the fourth inning to give the Bobcats the one-run advantage. Lonna Addison doubled the lead for Lees-McRae in the fifth with a RBI single that plated Hannah Foster.
  • Taylor Beurrier added to the Bobcat lead with a RBI single up the middle that scored Presson.
  • Newberry answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to tak the one-run lead and recorded seven runs in the sixth to collect the 11-3 win in the first game of the doubleheader.
  • Addison had two hits in three plate appearances for the Bobcats and recorded one RBI in the loss. Addison collected the loss in the circle after going five innings while surrendering five runs (five earned) on five hits. Addison had nine strikeouts in her debut with the Bobcats.

FOR THE WOLVES:
  • Sierra Brogdon led Newberry in game one with three hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Hailey Hill joined her with a multi-hit game and added two RBIs.
  • Lindsey Foster earned the opening day victory in the circle while going five innings and striking out four.

GAME #2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 2; Newberry – 10  
LOCATION: Smith Road Complex – Newberry, South Carolina
RECORDS: Newberry (2-0), Lees-McRae (0-2)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Newberry scored three runs in the first two innings, but the Bobcats bounced back in the third with a two-run home run from Lauren Ritchie.
  • The Wolves registered seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the 10-2 win on Saturday afternoon.
  • Ritchie recorded two RBIs on her home run in the third. Beurrier, Destiny Brown, Morgan Crowe, and Meredith Summey all tallied hits in the second game.
  • Logan Zephir was the loss for the Bobcats after going three innings and giving seven runs (six earned) on six hits and four walks. Leah DiBello came in relief of Zephir and went one inning while surrendering three runs (three earned) on four hits.
FOR THE WOLVES:
  • Tori Rose and Brodgon led Newberry in the second game with three runs batted in apiece. Leah Evans had two RBIs with one hit.
  • Jayla Jackson earned the win in the circle with four complete innings of work and striking out two.
 
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae heads to Greeneville, Tennessee for the Tusculum Round Robin tournament starting next Saturday with games against Hillsdale and Tusculum.
