Softball Sweeps Converse in Conference Carolinas Divisional Play on Wednesday

DUNCAN, S.C. – The Lees-McRae softball team picked up two victories in Wednesday's Conference Carolinas doubleheader at Converse. 

GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 7; Converse – 5
LOCATION: Tyger River Stadium – Duncan, South Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (10-15/5-4), Converse (14-23/3-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Bobcats opened the scoring in the first inning off a sacrifice fly from Lonna Addison that plated Hannah Foster.
  • Converse gained the 2-1 lead after two runs via a two RBI single from Kayla Rocha.
  • Lees-McRae used a six run seventh inning rally to pick up the 7-5 victory over Converse. Morgan Crowe led off the inning with a single through the left side. Meredith Summey reached base on a fielder's choice and Foster advanced Summey to third off a single to the outfield.
  • Lauren Ritchie hit an RBI single to center field that scored Summey on the play and tied the score at two runs. Addison collected the one-run lead off a RBI groundout to the shortstop. Taylor Beurrier continued the scoring for the Bobcats with a fielding error from Converse at 4-2.
  • McKenzie Presson broke the game open with a three-run home run to center field as Lees-McRae led 7-2 in the top of the seventh.
  • The Valkyries made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh with three runs, but Addison finished the game with a strikeout of Valkyrie Karleigh Crabill.
  • Addison earned her eighth of the season after throwing seven innings and striking out 10 while allowing five runs (five earned) on six hits and one walk.
  • Presson led the Bobcats with three RBIs on the home run and Addison helped her cause in the circle with two RBIs. Ritchie chipped in an RBI on two hits for Lees-McRae.

FOR THE VALKYRIES:
  • Riley Lingerfelt suffered the loss for Converse after allowing seven runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks. Lingerfelt had five punchouts on the day.
  • Rocha had three RBIs to pace Converse in game one and six Valkyries recorded a hit in the contest.

GAME #2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae – 2; Converse – 0
LOCATION: Tyger River Stadium – Duncan, South Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (11-15/6-4), Converse (14-24/3-7)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  •  In the second game of today's doubleheader, the two sides were unable to manufacture any runs until the sixth inning as the Bobcats picked up their third win in a row with a two-run victory.
  • Ritchie got on base with a one-out double and Shelby Knaak followed with a walk in the sixth inning. Beurrier singled through the right side as Ritchie touched home plate for the one-run lead.
  • Addison worked around a lead-off double in the bottom of sixth to keep Lees-McRae in the lead, 1-0.
  • Destiny Brown started the seventh with a single through the left side and Foster collected a RBI double to score Brown on the play. Addison shut the door on the Valkyries bats in the bottom of seventh to preserve the 2-0 win.
  • Logan Zephir picked up her third victory of the season in the circle for the Bobcats after going five complete innings and scattering four hits. Addison collected her second save of the year while going two innings and striking out three in relief.
  • Foster had two hits in the second game of the doubleheader and five Bobcats recorded one hit apiece in the win.
FOR THE VALKYRIES:
  • Victoria Dichio went seven innings for Converse and surrendered two runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks.
  • Ayellad Howard, Madeline Modica, and Sydney Watson joined Dichio with one hit in the contest.
 
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae welcomes South Atlantic Conference opponent Emory & Henry to Banner Elk on Tuesday, April 2 for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
