Softball Drops High-Scoring Contests to Converse on Saturday

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Taylor Beurrier recorded three hits and three RBIs off two home runs, but the Lees-McRae softball team fell to Converse in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Converse – 20; Lees-McRae – 16
LOCATION: Bobcat Field – Banner Elk, North Carolina
RECORDS: Converse (12-17/4-1), Lees-McRae (6-21/0-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In a high scoring affair in the home opener, Converse recorded six runs to start the game. Lees-McRae battled back with four runs in the home half of the first. Abby Hatley scored on the throw after Allie Johnston stole second base. Beurrier made the score, 6-3, off a two-run home run. Rylee Konowalchuk followed with a solo home run after Beurrier's home run.
  • Converse followed with five runs each in the second and third inning and led 16-10 after three innings. 
  • Lees-McRae made the game interesting with a five-run fifth inning and trailed 18-16 heading into the sixth frame. Beurrier led off the inning with a solo home run. Konowalchuk drew a six-pitch walk and Morgan Crowe loaded the bases with a walk. Avery Walston drew a walk and the Bobcats trailed 18-13. Hatley collected a RBI groundout that scored Brooks Eaddy and Crowe scored off a fielding error by the Valkyries.
  • Converse registered two more runs in the sixth and earned the 20-16 win in the first game of the day.
  • Beurrier paced the Bobcats with three hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Konowalchuk followed with two hits, two RBIs, and two walks. Johnston notched two RBIs, three runs, and one hit. Walston tallied two runs in four at-bats for the Bobcats.

FINAL SCORE: Converse – 16; Lees-McRae – 4 F/5
LOCATION: Bobcat Field – Banner Elk, North Carolina
RECORDS: Converse (13-17/5-1), Lees-McRae (6-22/0-6)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae led 2-0 after a two-run home run from Brittany Gingrich in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Converse rallied with seven runs in the second inning and collected the 16-4 in five innings.
  • Gingrich led the Bobcats with two RBIs off the home run in the first inning. Hatley followed with two hits and Johnston notched two hits for the Bobcats.
  • Logan Zephir suffered the loss for Lees-McRae after allowing four runs (four earned) on five hits and one walk.

UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae travels to Belmont Abbey on Tuesday, March 25 for a doubleheader with the Crusaders starting at 1 p.m.
